NANS’ Financial Secretary, Comrade Adeyinka Williams Olaseinde popularly known as Sir Newton has called on all student union leaders in Nigeria to make student unionism a tool for stable academic calendars in Nigeria Universities.
Sir Newton said this while delivering his speech at the Leadership Seminar on Students Unionism reform held at The Great Hall, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso.
The NANS’ Financial Secretary in his speech said that a stable calendar in universities cannot be achieved when students are living in fears of insecurity. He urges the students union leaders to work more on the safety of their students.
“If you are learning in an environment that’s not safe, you will not be able to process whatsoever you are learning because you’re psychologically affected by the security failure in the environment. General academics can be disrupted If there is a lot of violence and if the students are scared to go to classes because of fear of casualties.”
Sir Newton urges student union executives to carry their hall chairmen and executives along in profounding lasting solutions to insecurity in hostels.
“Work with the landlords association, the police force, night guards(vigilantes), and other security personnel in ensuring that the lives of students who live off-campus are also well secured.”
Also at the event were the LAUTECH dean of students’ affairs, Dr. A.O Ige, Hon. Seun Fakorede; Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Oyo state, Miss Ahmed Adeola; First female Student Union President, FUNNAB, and other important personalities.
